Astros pitcher arrested in wedding reception melee
By MONICA RHOR, Associated Press Writer

HOUSTON (AP)—Astros pitcher Brandon Backe was among 10 people arrested during a brawl with police at a weekend wedding reception in a Galveston hotel bar.

The bride’s father, 19-year-old brother and a FEMA coordinator were also arrested Sunday at the hotel, a command center for emergency workers after Hurricane Ike went through Galveston Island on Sept. 13.

Police spokesman Capt. Walter Braun said an internal affairs investigation has been launched.

The 30-year-old Backe, a member of the wedding party, ignored police orders to back away from the fight, and struggled with officers who attempted to handcuff him, according to police reports.

One officer said he hit Backe twice in the face before handcuffing him. Both the officer and Backe sustained minor injuries during the fight, according to the police report.

“We are aware of an incident involving Brandon. We have spoken with him regarding his version of the event. Since this is a legal matter, any further comment on our part would be inappropriate,” Astros spokesman Jimmy Stanton said in a statement.

Backe was charged with interfering with a police officer and resisting arrest, said Joel H. Bennett, Galveston County assistant criminal district attorney. Both charges are misdemeanors. He was released on $1,500 bond.

Backe, a Galveston native, joined the Astros in 2004 after two seasons with Tampa Bay.

A Star Is Born

This post is in celebration for my great friend, Julia Morales. In response to the press release below this video, she called upon the support of her loving friend (that would be me) to produce a compelling video that would surely get her this much deserved scholarship. I joked with her that if she didn’t get selected then I would give up video production all together. I knew the video was a hit and show ’nuff, she got it! Love ya Jules and good luck in NYC!

NBC Universal and The PIT Partner in Diversity Scholarship

May 2, 2008: As part of their new Talent Diversity Initiative, NBC Universal is proud to announce its Improv Scholarship Program in partnership with The Peoples Improv Theater (The PIT) in New York City to support and promote diversity within the arts.

NBC Universal and The PIT will each sponsor one student for The PIT’s entire year-long improv program, which takes students from Level 1 to Level 5, and is taught by some of comedy’s newest and greatest talents including Kurt Braunohler, Ptolemy Slocum, Rebekka Johnson and Ali Farahnakian.

“NBC is proud to join with the The PIT in sponsoring this vital scholarship that will encourage new voices within the minority community to learn valuable skills under the guidance of such an excellent program,” said Marc Hirschfeld, Executive Vice President, Casting, NBC Universal Television. “This involvement underscores NBC Universal’s continuing commitment to promote diversity.”

“I love the idea of working with NBC, it is the channel I grew up with,” said Ali Farahnakian, the owner and founder of The PIT, and former SNL writer. “To me NBC is television and the best it has to offer. To be in partnership with them in any way is an honor.”

“I am thrilled and honored that NBC has offered to sponsor a new and improved Improv Scholarship program here,” said Katie Goan, Managing Director of The PIT. “It’s exciting that more students will now be able to experience the joys of improv due to this promising partnership.”

All performers, particularly talented women and people of color with a strong desire to study improv, are eligible to apply. The candidate will submit an official Improv Scholarship application along with a five-minute DVD in which the candidate explains why he or she should be chosen and performs an original comedic work. The two scholarship recipients will be selected by The PIT and NBC Universal executives, and awarded in September.

Wedding Ring Deflects Robber’s Bullet

interesting! :)  POSTED: 10:38 am CST December 3, 2007JACKSON, Miss. – Don’t try telling Donnie Register about guys who don’t want to wear a wedding ring.   Police credit his wedding band with possibly saving his life.  Police reported that two men walked into Register’s shop at The Antique Market in Jackson, Miss., and asked to see a coin collection.  One of the men pulled a gun, police said.  Register threw up his left hand just as a shot was fired, and his wedding ring deflected the bullet.  His wife, Darlene, said bullet fragments lodged in one of her husband’s fingers and in his neck.  But the injuries are not life-threatening.  Darlene Register added that God deserves all the credit for saving her husband.By The Associated Press.

Unique Candles

Looking to add a unique touch to your wedding ceremony? Then here it is. A local artist shared this work of art with me as an idea for a Unity Candle. The following image is a candle embellished with Repujado (Re-poo-ha-dough) artwork. Repujado translates to “metal relief” and is a beautiful handcrafted work of art. It’s as unique as a snowflake. A Unity Candle can be designed with your names, wedding date or any other message as well as a unique design to wrap it. If you are interested in having a candle crafted for you, contact me and I will put you in touch with the artist, Rosa.
